Computing

ICT is a powerful tool which is central to the educational process. The Staff at Moreton Primary CEVA School recognise the potential of ICT in terms of learning and teaching and as a core competence for young people.

We want our pupils to become independent autonomous learners who are confident and competent using technology. We are aware of the rapid development and the increasing complexity and range of uses of ICT (much broader than just computers) and the increase of interactive technologies in schools. We believe that ICT is an essential part of everyday life, we therefore aim, to give our students the confidence and ability to move with these changes as they arrive in order to prepare them for their futures.

How we teach Computing

We recognise the success of ICT training in raising the profile of Computing within our school and in enthusing teachers to create inspiring lessons. Through C.P.D (Continuing Professional Development) we aim to develop and strengthen the use of ICT to support learning and teaching.

Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability or additional needs, to flourish and become the very best version of themselves. We teach a clear and effective scheme of work that provides coverage and progression in line with the National Curriculum, based on the Chris Quigley Essentials Curriculum. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.

To ensure a broad range of skills and understanding, Computing is taught across four main strands:

  • Online Safety,
  • Digital literacy,
  • Information technology.
  • Computer science

Within digital literacy, children develop practical skills, learn to solve problems and learn how to use the internet safely. As part of information technology, children learn to use and express themselves and develop their ideas through ICT for example writing and presenting as well as exploring art and design using multimedia. In computer science we teach children to understand and apply the fundamental principles, for example logic, algorithms and data representation. Children complete these computing units half-termly, but digital literacy and vocabulary are embedded in all subjects and are used on a daily basis to enhance and support the learning of other curriculum areas.

At Moreton Primary School, we give children access to a wide range of good quality resources and provide cross curricular opportunities for children to apply their computing knowledge and skills. All classes have a scheduled Computing lesson at least once a fortnight, with regularly planned cross-curricular learning which integrates the use of multi-media equipment, as we aim to ensure that computing is embedded in our whole school curriculum.
