English

Our English curriculum is designed to enable children to be able to express themselves in an effective and appropriate manner to a wide range of audiences and purposes including being articulate communicators and responsive listeners. Our whole school approach to literacy takes children through progressive stages of learning and challenge, enabling them to fulfil their potential. We provide a language rich environment which promotes a culture of reading and writing and fosters an interest in words, their meanings allowing children to view literacy as enjoyable, rewarding and worthwhile.

How we teach English

Children start their English journey with Read Write Inc encompassing the basic skills to enable them to be able to read and write. Alongside this, children are exposed to high quality planned out texts in EYFS and then in Year 1 using Talk Through Stories. From the Spring Term of Year 2 the children that are at the expected level in their reading with continue their English learning using  Take One Book and other high-quality texts to deliver reading, writing and oracy:

Links have been made to either History/Geography or Science where they provide a rich source of learning and enhance the topic covered at the same time achieving a high standard of Literacy. Providing hooks to begin the texts and approaches such as echo reading ensures that all children can become immersed in what they are doing. Our policies (below) gives further details.
