Music

At Moreton Primary School, our pupils will learn that music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. It is our intent that we make music an inspiring and enjoyable learning experience which will develop the children’s musical skills and prepare them in readiness for senior school. We hope to foster an understanding of the great variety of music that this world has to offer by exposing them to diverse musical experiences and igniting a passion for music. We encourage all of our students to listen and respond to different musical styles, find their voices as singers, and gain the musical knowledge to compose, and in doing so all of our students will have the opportunity to become confident, reflective musicians. It is our aim to develop a life-long love of music, strengthen their talent as musicians, and give them an opportunity to experience playing instruments, as this in turn will increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.

How we teach music

Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to enable all children, regardless of

background, ability or additional needs, to flourish and become the very best version of themselves. We teach a clear and effective scheme of work that provides coverage and progression in line with the National Curriculum, based on the Chris Quigley Essentials Curriculum. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.

To ensure a broad range of skills and understanding, Music is taught across six main strands:

  • Musical Terminology
  • Listening and Response
  • Composition and Playing
  • Instruments of the Orchestra
  • Music History
  • World Music

All classes have dedicated Music lessons throughout the year, alongside whole school singing assemblies; by singing songs, the children will learn about the structure and organisation of music. Our teaching focuses on developing our student’s ability to understand rhythm and follow a beat through performing on a range of musical instruments. We teach them to listen and appreciate different forms of music across different time periods, cultures and traditions, which encourages the children to be open minded when listening to the many musical genres in the world today.

Children develop descriptive language skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent different feelings, emotions and narratives. We also teach them technical vocabulary such as volume, pitch, beat and rhythm and encourage children to discuss music using these terms. As the curriculum progress the children will learn to appreciate how music can support many other areas of the curriculum such as art, dance and drama.

All KS1 and KS2 children are offered the opportunity to join the Musical Theatre Club which performs regularly in school and at events in the local community. The school also has whole class, external Ukulele lessons in Year 5 and Year 6, recorder lessons in Year 4 and Glockenspiel lessons in Year 2. Children are also offered the prospect of taking private piano lessons with an external provider and opportunities for all key stages are given to perform in class, in whole school assemblies and also to parents.
