Maths

The National Curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.’

At Moreton our Maths curriculum enables every child to become a mathematician.  They are taught fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills to ensure they are fully equipped for the future.  We enable children to think mathematically and apply their skills confidently in a range of contexts.  We foster an appreciation of the power of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

How we teach maths:

We follow the White Rose approach as the basis for our Mathematics curriculum.   This approach is centred around the principle of Maths Mastery. It places an emphasis on developing children’s number skills and encouraging children to deepen and master their learning on one objective before moving on. Within this scheme children have a much longer block of time to access each area of mathematics and will be able to apply what they have learnt to other mathematical areas throughout the year. The children are encouraged to practice and develop their competency within each area, reason and talk about their maths and use and apply what they have learnt to other mathematical areas throughout the year.

In an ordinary teaching week, Problem Solving and Reasoning style challenges are taught and practiced within the current mathematical concept alongside varied fluency and in a variety of ways. In addition to White Rose Hub and teacher made resources, teachers have year group packs of resources they can draw upon such as TTS ‘dip and pick’ problem solving cards and ‘can you convince me’ cards. Regular investigations are planned to encourage children to challenge their own ideas and each-others while allowing exploration of mathematical concepts. These are taken from recognised providers such as NRich, White Rose Maths, Have you got maths eyes and NCTEM.

Assertive Mentoring, which takes place every morning, ensures the consistent and continuous revision of mathematical concepts throughout the school year regardless of the topic being covered in completed in Maths lessons. Furthermore, the scheme allows for the introduction of mathematical concepts prior to children exploring them in lessons thus enabling them to become familiar with vocabulary and processes they will see in the future. We use TT Rockstars to support children’s fluency in learning their multiplication facts – a link to this can be found on the children’s page.

Below are the maths overviews for each year group. At parents evening we give out the key objectives that each child should know by the end of the year.
